I have a confession.

I’m super lazy about stretching before and after my workouts. Why? I don’t know. I’m usually excited to jump right into things and then when I’m done, I’m done.

If I’m running, I do try to ease a bit into it before full-on sprinting and I do (usually) take a little time to cool down.

But stretching? Rarely.

I decided to do some digging. Aside from the laziness, I also hold back because I don’t always know what stretches to do and when.

Jillian Michaels talks about stretching in this Everyday Health article, The Do’s and Don’t of Stretching.

Michaels says that you should only stretch after workouts when your muscles are warmed up.

Her additional advice also includes: Stretch evenly, stay hydrated, don’t bounce, breathe through your stretches and hold each stretch for approximately 30 seconds.

To prevent injury, maintain proper posture, don’t overstretch your muscles, don’t overextend joints and if it hurts – don’t do it.
